Figure 3 Subsequently Hertz (2011a), suggested that (i) the reduction of oxaloacetate to malate was a necessary compensatory consequence of the reduction of NAD + to NADH during the one oxidative process during glycolysis (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to 1-3-biphosphoglycerate), without which normally no production of -ketoglutarate can occur from glucose, and (ii) that aspartate, formed from OAA in astrocytes when glutamate during its oxidation is transaminated to -ketoglutarate , supplied the needed aspartate , as illustrated in Figure 3B
