The cover of this (circa) 1900 Fifth Avenue Hotel breakfast menu shows an engraving of the early wayside stop which was known as Madison Cottage, where travelers could eat and rest. It was originally known as the Horn Farmhouse and sat at what would be the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street. It was turned into an inn by William Corporal Thompson and it was named Madison Cottage after
